hostel performance rehearsal, church of st Mary of the Angels

Yesterday was the hostel performance rehearsal. It was HIDEOUS.

Hostel performance is a hostel event where everyone is grouped and each group must come up with an item to be performed on a certain day. You can do whatever thing you want to show, i.e. skit, dance, choir, etc.

From the beginning we are not looking forward to this event at all. What to expect anyway? Our number is (slightly only) less than the sickening people down there and thus we’ll be the (a bit of) minority later in the group. None of them are nice, so it’s not possible to feel good about doing this. And our fear (well not really. We prepared for it, just that it’s still not very nice) came true. The stupid people are so annoying and even from the first meeting they nearly were not contributing at all. Only certain people would say anything relevant to the topic. SOME people would just talk among themselves and not say their suggestion loudly and when we asked them, “Is ok?” they wouldn’t say anything cos they’re too cowardice to say anything out loud and they’re just hellishly annoying to death.

So yes. Our group decided to just do a skit, a revised version of the story Snow White. Yes, the one with 7 midgets but in our case they’re not midgets. And the Snow White is an emo as well.

After more or less 3 meetings, in which THAT STUPID ANNOYING PERSON didn’t come at all (much to my relief), we decided to divide the tasks to make it easier to work. The sec 4s would write the script, and sec 3s would do all the playing. Later then sec 4s would make the props as well. As a result the casts (sec 3s) never meet us (sec 4s, the props people). Which is good.

But later on, during the rehearsal, it turned out that our skit is so SO hideous. None of the casts brought the script down and a lot of them haven’t memorized their lines. As for the props, we haven’t finished with all of them so we didn’t use them. There were a bit of confusion in the lighting but it wasn’t very major because we’ve never practiced with them.

BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY DIDN’T LOOK AS IF THEY GAVE A BIT OF EFFORT TO MAKE THE SHOW GOOD. Ok some people at least tried to memorize their lines, like the Ah Beng and the Queen, but the rest? Especially THOSE STUPID SUPPOSEDLY 7 PEOPLE BUT ONLY THREE CAME UP. What the hell.

On a lighter note, last night we went to Church of St Mary of the Angels (is it in Jurong or Bukit Batok?). It was so cool; it was more like a villa than a church. The body of Jesus was suspended in air by wires rather than attached to a cross, as if flying. I thought that there was no cross, and the symbol of Catholic is the crucifix, which is a cross with Jesus’ body on it, but if it’s only Jesus’ body, it means that it’s not Catholic’s symbol right? But if you see it closely, there is the cross. I think it’s drawn on the wall, but it’s still there. It was damn cool.
